Natural Building

Aesthetic landscape features and functional spaces are created using natural building techniques and materials. From benches and walls to earthen ovens and outbuildings, terrasophia’s experience in natural building will compliment home and landscape. Using local, renewable, low-processed, and recycled materials in creative ways adds functional and beautiful elements to any site. Natural building work parties are an empowering and fun way to bring family, friends, and neighbors together over a common focus. Natural Building workshops, coaching, and project management empower people of all ages and walks of life to take part in sculpting landscape features, shelter and community out of locally available materials.  See our calendar for up-coming events or contact us to discuss your specific project.

Our collaboration with Sacred Mountains Foundation within the Navajo Nation of northeast Arizona, USA, continues, with 2010 Programs being planned. Additional Support is needed for this project. Committed time, materials, and Tax-deductible donations are being transformed into regenerative projects with real economic, social, and health benefits to the local people. Visit our projects page to learn more about this project. Cultural tours are available through Go Navajo Trails for supporters seeking an in-depth experience into Navajo culture and exploration of the diverse regional wonders of the Southwest.

Landscape Walls & Features

Walls designed into a landscape provide privacy, buffer noise and create outdoor living spaces. Integrating planting in a wall, as a living roof and in the adjacent landscape enhances the beauty and provides unique planting climates. Great for deflecting wind and catching the sun's thermal energy, creating cozy places to enjoy a sunny afternoon, sit around an outdoor fire, and/or listen to the rain in a dry alcove. Other natural building features include: benches, sculptures, earthen ovens,

Outbuildings*

Passive solar design, beauty, functionality, and creativity weave together in sculpting outbuildings from recycled, salvaged, natural and conventional building materials applied using a project specific palette of techniques. Outbuildings provide an additional space for practicing meditation or yoga, on-going projects, or storing tools. Strategically placed structures create functional connections and attractive features with rainwater harvesting opportunities. ------

*Outbuildings are typically 120 sq feet or less with no power or utility connections

Plastering

Earthen plaster is applied to retrofit and weatherize existing structures, protect earthen walls, landscape features, and outbuildings, and provides a creative medium for mosaics and relief sculpting. Plaster in made on-site using various mixes of clay, sand, fiber (straw, paper pulp etc), water and a binder (clay or low percentage of cement) to meet a projects need for thermal mass, insulation, weather exposure/resistance, and/or sculpting with the materials available locally within the project budget.
