Integrated Rainwater Harvesting Systems  (2 days or longer)

This experiential workshop is designed for homeowners, landscape and construction professionals, designers, and students seeking a deeper understanding of rainwater harvesting systems. Participants will explore practical background knowledge for effectively designing and implementing rainwater harvesting systems integrated into the landscape. A foundational understanding of natural and developed watersheds combined with an overview of current frameworks and concepts relevant to rainwater harvesting will support participants in seeing the big picture and understanding the challenges and opportunities of this field. From this base we will delve into a hierarchy of landscape water use and supply, with key calculations, considerations, and components used to design integrated rainwater harvesting systems. Classroom presentation, discussion, and small group activity will be supported by field-based assessment and applications.

Hands-on installation of a rainwater harvesting system at the host site will ground participants’ experience with take-home skills and practical experience for developing personal systems or a professional practice. A discussion of next steps and further resources will round out our experience together and prepare participants for continued opportunities in rainwater harvesting.
