Rain Garden Design and Installation  (1 day)

Rain gardens welcome water running off roofs, driveways and other impervious surfaces into the landscape where it can soak into the soil to recharge groundwater aquifers and be available for plants to use. With an appropriate palette of plants, rain gardens are a functionally aesthetic contribution to both stormwater pollution and water supply challenges. Rain gardens are fun and practical additions to the landscape.

During this hands-on workshop we will explore the components of rain gardens and learn techniques for calculating runoff and sizing rain gardens. A foundational understanding of the relationships between landscaping and water will be explored. Core design considerations will be covered using the host site as our laboratory and we will spend the afternoon installing a rain garden on site. Participants will leave with the tools and experience to begin their own rain garden projects.

Learning Objectives:

-        Understand the role landscaping plays in the water cycle and how rain gardens contribute to regenerating a healthy hydrology

-        Gain familiarity with the design considerations and key calculations for rain gardens
