Swales Defined
Swales are trenches dug on contour to help with water management, erosion control, and creating diverse planting habitats. This swale was filled with rotting wood that had previously been used to grow edible mushrooms.
Additional organic matter was added to fill the swale back up to grade, and plants were placed in appropriate microclimates. Swales can be used to manage stormwater runoff, increase groundwater recharge, add topographical diversity, and/or create terraces. |
