A drought and deer tolerant landscape of aromatic herbs and colorful flowers arises from a small suburban lot in east Marin County. Detailed site design was followed by swales and removal of exotic opportunistic plants. Planting was done in collaboration with the Donahue family. The plantings provide year round interest for little maintenance, and provide a number of tasty treats for the kitchen. Citrus is establishing close to the house, making best use of a south facing masonry wall. A series of cascading wine barrels carries roof water away from the foundation to a mulched swale with perennial plants. In the summer, a pump recirculates water through the barrels creating a cooling effect that also soothes the sounds of a nearby road.

This property in West Sonoma County was transformed from a turf area surrounded by a few trees and vegetable patches into a water harvesting food forest. A excavator was used to dig three ponds and connect them with a swale and spillway systems that allows thousands of gallons of water a year to infiltrate back into the groundwater. Topography creating in shaping the landscape provides a diversity of microclimates for fruit trees, berry patches, medicinal herbs, and vegetables to supply a portion of on-site needs. Chickens and ducks help with maintenance while edible mushrooms pop out of shady areas.
